This series of acrylic paintings and mixed media works use the romantic metaphor of a message in a bottle to symbolize the desire to be heard and connect.

The “Take Me Out of the Blue” sub-series is inspired by a ~100 letters written by my young grandfather to my grandmother while he was a soldier in WWI. War is a million heartaches shattered into million pieces. Desperate for connection, he consistently begged her to write more.  Hearing from his “wifey” seems the only thing that could save him from his state, one felt by so many whether in times of war, a global pandemic, or simply everyday life.  At the same time, I was also struck by how my grandfather continually expressed hope for the next communication and the day they would meet again. I try to reflect both the sunny possibility of this would-be reunion as well as the “the Blue” that can befall us all.
